Personalize Your Attendants to Fit Your Wedding Style

At many of the wedding rehearsals I have attended, there are several things that always seem to come up and other questions that aren’t so common when it comes to the bridal party groomsmen and bridesmaids. Do you line up the attendants by height? Do the men and women walk in two by two or do the men enter and await the bridesmaids who enter unescorted? How many attendants should one have? Do the ring bearer and flower girl stand with the groomsmen and bridesmaids? Does any of this really matter? Not really.

The order of your attendants can be anything you want, by height, by color of hair, by age, who has the best tan, it really doesn’t matter. But, if you have spouses who are in you bridal party, it is good to pair them up together. And if there are strangers in the group, be sure to introduce them to each other before you line them up.

Entering two by two, or unescorted is really just the couple’s preference. There is no set rule on this, it is a six of one, half a dozen of the other kind of thing. Some people think it is more elegant if the men escort the bridesmaids, but again, it really doesn’t matter.

How many attendants should one have? How many close friends do you have? But you might want to consider how much space there is for them to stand at the altar which could limit the number. And it is quite OK to have an unequal number on each side. You see, it really doesn’t matter.

Now, about the little ones, because this really does matter. If your ring bearer and flower girl are seven and up, they will probably be comfortable standing with the attendants. But if you have little ones, it is best to have them be seated with the other guests. The eyes of your guests should be on the bride and groom, and not on any distractions the little ones might cause.

Here, also, are a couple of things that do matter. Have the attendants walk at a normal pace and space them no more than twenty or thirty feet apart. No one is waiting anxiously for them, they are not the queen of the ball. The bride is. So get the attendants in and lined up so the elegance, the romance, the cherished moment can begin.
